During the months long voyage to the Red Planet the crew kept themselves occupied with maintaining & repairing the gigantic ship they travelled on.
The Venture had been well designed and featured all manner of multiple redundancies & protection from the hazards of space travel, but micro meteorite impacts could still occur, and sometimes things just plain broke.
What would be a cumbersome and hazardous procedure for a regular astronaut was quite straightforward and even fun for the space adapted crew members.
With their bodies encased in a tough radiation proof laminate rubber 'skin' and breathing liquid fluorocarbon they simply had to slip into an armoured suit with maneuvering thrusters, clip on an extended liquid breathing pack, then drift out the nearest hatch. The majority of the ship was unpressurised so there was no need for all the hassle of pressurising & unpressurising airlocks, the rubberised crew operated equally as well in atmosphere as in vacuum.
The only parts of the ship that were pressurised were those that contained equipment that required cooling via convection, and even then those areas were pressurised with nitrogen, reducing the fire risk to zero.

Why sending a machine when a human, female, in a skintight rubber suit, could do the work!
